Manufacturing

EG&G houses a number of scientific laboratories, complete machine, sheet metal and alodining shops, optical bench, and electronic assembly and checkout laboratories. These capabilities enable us to perform rapid prototype fabrication and evaluation of hardware.

Machine Shop
A well equipped, precision machine shop produces a wide variety of prototype and production discrete parts as well as sub and final assemblies. The shop has a variety of turning capacities, from a Harding tool room lathe to a 21-inch gap bed engine lathe. Milling work is done with rotary tables and dividing heads. A 50-ton hydraulic press, heat treating equipment, tool and surface grinders, saws, and other necessary components are available. We also have a 300-amp shielded arc and TIG welder, spot welder, and oxy-acetylene welding equipment.

Sheet Metal Shop
The Sheet Metal Shop provides total prototype and production unit metal fabrication support to the electrical and mechanical engineering groups. Shop equipment includes a 35-ton hydraulic press brake, a 48-inch power shear, punches, dies, filing machines, and auxiliary hand tools necessary to produce panels, chassis, and specialized instrument enclosures. In-house engraving, painting and chromate passivating capabilities allow short turnaround time.

Electronic Fabrication Laboratory
The Electronic Fabrication Lab is equipped for production as well as research and development in the electronic, optical, and mechanical areas. Our personnel can fabricate and assemble electronic hardware which may range from developing prototypes to production items built to existing drawings. Our personnel have extensive experience in chassis wiring, wire-wrapping, PC board assembly, cable harnessing, rack wiring and precision mechanical assembly. They are also experienced in hot stamping, cable marking, lacing, potting, conformal coating, heatshrinking, surface mounting, and fiber optic cable polishing and terminating. The laboratory has a fiber optic connector polishing machine, ultrasonic cleaners, terminal insertion tools, ribbon cable connector installation tools, heating and cooling ovens, and a wide range of crimping, insertion and extraction tools required for specialty items.

Electronic Checkout Laboratory
The Electronic Checkout Laboratory is equipped to support production testing, research and development prototype testing and quality acceptance testing. The technicians are proficient in the checkout and troubleshooting of a wide range of electronic technologies, including RF, logic and fiber optics. We routinely use RF network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, communication monitors and analyzers, oscilloscopes, logic and bus analyzers and high-speed transient digitizers, as well as a wide variety of signal generators and digital multimeters. A large environmental test chamber fully complements the checkout capability.

Sensor Laboratory
The Sensor Laboratory provides capability for the design, development, evaluation, and production of precision sensors for Government and commercial customers. Facilities, personnel, and equipment to produce intricate, epoxy-encapsulated prototype sensors, as well as production units for use in varied defense programs are available. The laboratory has complete instrumentation for sub-nanosecond pulse work and includes a double-shielded screen room.
